Dear Mr. Dickens:
This is a request to you in your capacity as Acting Associate Provost
for Computing.
Namely, the Computer Science Department would like to use Provost's
computer funds in order to run CS206 this fall on the PDP-10 computer at the
IMSS. The estimated cost is $4700 as compared to an estimate of $21,000 for
using the 360/67. The PDP-10 estimate was made by Professor Suppes and the
360/67 estimate was made by Jon Sandelin on the basis of the fact that this course
used approximately 2800 hours of terminal time and 2800 minutes of CPU time
when run on the AI Lab's PDP-10 in the Spring.
The disparity is increased by the fact that the SCIP estimate does not
cover the use of terminals and the IMSS estimate does. The course has been run in
the past on the AI Lab PDP-10, but the AI Lab computer is very heavily loaded,
and an increase in capacity is not expected for a long time.
Sincerely yours,
John McCarthy
Professor of Computer Science
